NYS Concealed Carry 18-Hour Training
New York State Concealed Carry Firearms Safety Training
This course fulfills the New York State–mandated training requirement to apply for or renew a pistol permit.
As of September 2022, New York State issues two types of pistol permits:
1. Premise Permit (also known as “Sportsman” on Long Island)
Allows possession of a handgun at your residence and transportation only to and from authorized training facilities.
2. Concealed Carry Permit
Allows the legal concealed carry of a handgun within New York State, excluding statutorily prohibited locations.

Course Description
NYS Concealed Carry Firearm Safety Training
New York State requires a total of 18 hours of training, consisting of:
- 16 hours of in-person classroom instruction
- 2 hours of live-fire range training
Front Line Training Center is authorized by New York State to provide this instruction.
Upon successful completion, students will receive an official NYS-approved certificate, required for permit application or renewal.
16-Hour In-Person Classroom Curriculum Includes:
- General firearm safety
- Safe firearm storage practices
- New York State and Federal firearm laws
- Concealed carry awareness, display, and concealment
- Conflict de-escalation strategies
- Effects of alcohol and drugs on firearm safety
- Best practices when interacting with law enforcement
- NYS defined sensitive and restricted locations
- Conflict management techniques
- Use of deadly physical force
- Suicide prevention and awareness
- Basic principles of marksmanship
Written Examination:
Following the classroom portion, students must achieve a minimum score of 80% on the NYS-required written exam.
2-Hour Live-Fire Training Curriculum Includes:
- Range safety rules and procedures
- Safe drawing and re-holstering techniques
- Target acquisition
- Dry-fire fundamentals
- Safe loading and unloading
- Firearm condition checks
- Verifying a safe and unloaded firearm
- Safe and controlled live-fire exercises
Live-Fire Proficiency:
Each student must demonstrate firearm proficiency as required by New York State under the supervision of a Duly Authorized Instructor.
