8 Hour Initial Security Course
This is an 8 hour course required by New York State as the first step in obtaining a security guard license from the New York State Department of State. The course provides the student with a general overview of the duties and responsibilities of a security guard. Topics covered in this course include the role of the security guard, legal powers and limitations, emergency situations, communications and public relations, access control, and ethical conduct. The passing of an examination is required for successful completion of this course.
16 Hour On-The-Job Course
This is a 16 hour course that must be completed within 90 days of employment as a security guard. The course provides the student with detailed information on the duties and responsibilities of a security guard. Topics covered in this course include the role of a security guard, legal powers and limitations, emergency situations, communications and public relations, access control, ethical conduct, incident command structure, and terrorism. The passing of an examination is required for successful completion of this course.
8 Hour Unarmed Refresher
This is a basic course which fulfills all the New York State Armed Guard Mandatory 47 hour Firearms Training as required by the NYS Div. of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), when fully completed. All NYS basic requirements are taught, first in the classroom, then on the range (for those with NYS/NYC Pistol Permits). This course is an excellent introduction to firearms for the first time shooter. Classroom instruction includes firearm safety for revolvers, semi-autos, and long guns, basic fundamentals, nomenclature, use of physical force/deadly force, and a written test. Range sessions include basic shooting exercises, advanced accuracy exercises, barricades, low light shooting, reloading, and a proficiency test. A NYS approved certificate is issued upon successful completion of the 47 hour Course.
8 Hour Armed Refresher
This course is designed by the NYS Div. of Criminal Justice Services, Security Guard Program. Armed Guards must complete this course annually. It includes 3 hours of classroom refresher on the Use of Force followed by a written exam, and 5 hours of weapons qualification which includes a proficiency examination.
Two examinations are required for successful completion of the 8 Hour Annul Firearms Training Course for Armed Security Guards.
Students must pass the written Use of Force/Deadly Physical Force Exam.
Pass one qualifying course of fire with either a semi-auto or revolver.**
**Students currently employed as armed security guards MUST train with the handgun they are authorized to carry in accordance with their duties utilizing service/duty ammunition.
