New York State Security Guard Training Programs
Front Line Training Center offers New York State–approved security guard training designed to meet all requirements set by the New York State Department of State and the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS).
8-Hour Initial Security Guard Course
This 8-hour course is the first required step in obtaining a New York State Security Guard License through the New York State Department of State.
The course provides a comprehensive introduction to the roles, duties, and responsibilities of a security guard.
Topics Include:
- Role and responsibilities of a security guard
- Legal powers and limitations
- Emergency response procedures
- Communication skills and public relations
- Access control and patrol procedures
- Ethical conduct and professionalism
Examination Required:
Successful completion requires passing a written examination.
16-Hour On-The-Job Training Course
This 16-hour course must be completed within 90 days of employment as a security guard.
It delivers in-depth instruction on the operational responsibilities of a working security professional.
Topics Include:
- Role and responsibilities of a security guard
- Legal powers and limitations
- Emergency response and incident handling
- Communications and public interaction
- Access control procedures
- Ethical conduct
- Incident Command Structure (ICS)
- Terrorism awareness
Examination Required:
Students must pass a written examination to successfully complete the course.
8-Hour Unarmed Refresher Course
This course satisfies New York State unarmed security guard refresher requirements and is also part of the mandatory 47-hour Firearms Training Program as regulated by the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) when completed in full.
The course is an excellent introduction for first-time shooters, combining classroom instruction with live-fire training for eligible participants holding a valid NYS/NYC Pistol Permit.
Classroom Instruction Covers:
- Firearm safety for revolvers, semi-automatic pistols, and long guns
- Firearms fundamentals and nomenclature
- Use of physical force and deadly physical force
- NYS legal requirements
- Written examination
Range Training Includes:
- Basic shooting fundamentals
- Advanced accuracy drills
- Barricade shooting
- Low-light shooting
- Reloading techniques
- Firearms proficiency testing
Upon successful completion of the full 47-hour training program, students receive a New York State–approved certificate.
8-Hour Armed Security Guard Annual Refresher
This annual refresher course is required for all armed security guards and is designed by the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services – Security Guard Program.
Course Breakdown:
- 3 hours of classroom instruction on Use of Force
- Written Use of Force / Deadly Physical Force examination
- 5 hours of live-fire weapons qualification
- Firearms proficiency examination
Completion Requirements:
- Pass the written Use of Force exam
- Successfully complete one qualifying course of fire with either:
- A semi-automatic pistol or
- A revolver
Important:
Students currently employed as armed security guards must qualify with the handgun they are authorized to carry, using approved service/duty ammunition, in accordance with their job responsibilities.
